Marc Broidy — On Travel Photography
November 6, 2023 — In the world of social media — pictures, edited pictures, travel photos, and videos are ubiquitous on the web.
It is difficult these days to ‘stun’ or ‘wow’ your social media audience by creating dazzling, unfiltered, and unedited images. Thus, I try to rely on two old friends to aid my work; composition and lighting.
Having spent the better part of twenty years studying and working in and around lighting design — I try to rely on the sun, the moon, reflection, and refraction to aid in the ‘wow’ factors in that which I shoot.
Additionally, I find that taking familiar landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and finding new and interesting ways to capture them — results in providing my social media audience another opportunity to pause and enjoy something familiar or novel, but in a new (pun intended) light.
Hopefully, I have done a faithful job in ‘practicing what I preach’ with the two images that follow. As earlier referenced, La Tour Eiffel — in what I believe to be a compositionally authentic setting — and Lago De Como at sunset. Both photos shot on an iphone 15 pro max (cropped but otherwise unedited). Enjoy!
